When connectivity becomes an operational constraint

Wi-Fi was designed for stationary devices inside buildings. A working site is neither. The gap shows up first in mobility, then in security, and only then in cost.

Built for movement

Cellular handover is decided by the network and prepared before the device leaves the cell. Wi-Fi roaming is decided by the client, which typically holds onto a weakening access point until it drops - the sticky client problem. Published measurements put Wi-Fi handover delay in the hundreds of milliseconds, most of it spent scanning for the next access point. Larger cells also mean far fewer handovers in the first place. Equipment that loses its link defaults to a safe state: it stops.

Security is in the standard, not the configuration

Every device authenticates with SIM credentials before it can attach. Encryption on the air interface is part of the specification, not a box someone has to tick. Access is revoked by disabling a SIM centrally - not by rotating a shared key across every scanner, camera and vehicle on site. The spectrum is licensed and assigned to your site, so no neighbouring network or consumer device shares the channel.

Loaders, crushers, weighbridges, cranes and cameras now ship instrumented. Telemetry, diagnostics and video are standard, and the connectivity those systems expect is cellular. A private network connects them the way they were designed to be connected - and keeps the data on site.

Wi-Fi coverage over a large yard needs an access point every 300–600 m², each with a power feed and a fibre or CAT6 run, each to be maintained. Radios, groundworks and service calls all scale with area at once. Above roughly 10 hectares the comparison stops being close.

More than 10 hectares of outdoor working area, or public coverage that fails at the far edge of the site.

Mobility
AGVs, mobile plant or handheld scanners that drop connection while moving. Cellular handover is network-controlled; Wi-Fi roaming is not.

SIM-level access control, air-interface encryption in the standard, and operational data that stays on your premises.

Costs you pay directly

Spectrum licence. Issued in your name and paid by you. We help with the application and supply the conformity documentation the regulator requires.

Vehicle routers. Approximately €500 per connected vehicle, supplied by us. Fitting is done by your own workshop or a local installer, with our configuration and remote support - the vehicles stay in your hands.

Electrical and network wiring, usually handled by the contractor already on site.
